Yerba Mate Tea Trend

Cravings, Wellness

I’m a constant tea drinker and am always open to trying new teas. The latest and greatest “super” tea seems to be Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate is said to:

  • Have multiple antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, amino acids
  • Increase energy (as it has more caffeine than most teas, but still less than coffee)
  • Aids in digestion
  • Helps with weight loss
  • Improves mental function/concentration

Sounds good to me….until I tried it. The taste of Yerba Mate reminded me of tree bark combined with smoke. It is not a tea I could drink on it’s own. After a few failed concoctions, I finally found a way to drink this wonder tea. Combine it with Mint Tea. The mint completely overpowers the Yerba Mate. Drink on!

Drinkable Yerba Mate:

  • 1 Yerba Mate tea bag
  • 1 Mint tea bag
  • Stevia (optional)

Sutter Creek CA Girls Weekend

Travel

This past weekend a few of us gals decided to have a weekend in Sutter Creek, in the Sierra Foothill wine country. This area is known for it’s Barbera wines and needless to say it is now a current fave of mine.

We arrived and found a charming one street town with shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms.

We stayed at The Hanford House in one of their bungalows. The bungalow was a two bedroom/two bath cute cottage with a front and back patio.  I would definitely recommend this reasonably priced place.

My favorite wine tasting was at Le Mulet Rouge for both the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and delicious wine.

A ‘must go to’ if you are in Sutter Creek is The Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe with over 80 cheeses available. The store is shared with Miller Wine Works and they offer wine tasting/cheese pairings. Amazing!

Having visited Sutter Creek now, I would advise:

  • Two days in Sutter Creek is sufficient time to enjoy the town itself.
  • There are plenty of tasting rooms. No driving necessary.
  • If you want to stay longer, there are places outside of town that would be fun to visit (including the haunted Preston Castle!).
  • The town is basically closed by 7pm. Nightlifers need not apply.

Current Reads x3

Culture

I’ve been on a book reading roll recently. Here are the last three books I’ve read.

The Last Madam is the true story of a famous New Orleans madam Norma Wallace. She ran a legendary house of prostitution in the French Quarter for approximately forty years. I was interested in the story of this woman; however, the book details quite a bit of the politics in New Orleans. Because of that, I would only recommend this book to people who would enjoy reading about the city’s history as well.

Everything I Never Told You is about a Chinese/American family whose daughter goes missing and is found dead. The pain and confusion the family goes through is felt through each family member in a real and honest way. I highly recommend this book.

I think all books from those who were affected by World War II are worth the read.

Vinaigrette Dressing

Cravings

It can’t get any easier than vinaigrette dressing for a salad, but I recently read a few pointers (frenchandparfait.com) to make it better.

The basic recipe:

  • 1 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt (mix until dissolved), then add…
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper, mix then add…
  • 3 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp at a time and mix

Here are the tips:

  • Vinegar to oil is always a 1 to 3 ratio
  • Use a wooden spoon (no metal)
  • The order you mix your ingredients is important. Mix as listed above

Variations:

  • Start with a minced shallot, then add the vinegar, salt, etc. as listed above
  • Add 1 tsp Dijon Mustard after the black pepper, before the oil
